How to Detect and Prevent Cavities

Most people know that tooth decay is a common problem, but many don’t know how to detect it early on. In this blog post, we will discuss the 8 most common symptoms of tooth decay. We will also provide tips on how to prevent cavities from forming in the first place!

What is tooth decay?

Tooth decay is the process by which a tooth becomes damaged and eventually falls out. It is caused by a combination of factors, including poor oral hygiene, eating sugary or acidic foods, and not getting enough fluoride.

Symptoms of tooth decay can vary depending on the severity of the decay. However, there are some common symptoms that are worth watching out for

  • Tooth sensitivity: If your teeth become sensitive to hot or cold temperatures, it could be a sign of tooth decay.
  • Visible holes or pits in your teeth: If you can see holes or pits in your teeth, it is a sure sign of decay.
  • Toothaches: If you experience tooth pain, it could be a sign that the decay has reached the nerve of the tooth.
  • Bad breath: If you have bad breath that doesn’t go away with brushing and flossing, it could be a sign of tooth decay.
  • White spots on your teeth: White spots on your teeth are one of the earliest signs of tooth decay.
  • Mild to sharp pain: If you feel pain when you bite down or chew, it could be a sign of tooth decay.
  • Brown or black staining of your teeth: If you notice brown or black staining on your teeth, it is a sign of decay.
  • Swelling or redness around your gums: If you notice swelling or redness around your gums, it could be a sign of tooth decay.

How to prevent tooth decay?

Luckily, there are some simple steps you can take to prevent tooth decay.

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss your teeth every day.
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit sugary snacks and drinks.
  • See your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.

If you take these steps, you can help prevent tooth decay and keep your smile healthy!

I'm not a great dental patient but I got the poor teeth in my family so I spend quite a bit of time in the dentist chair. I have gone to Nicole for over 10 years now and we have built a strong relationship where she knows me, what makes me nervous, and how to help me stay calm. This has built a really strong foundation of trust in Nicole and her team for my whole family.

Love this place!?! Best service from a dentist I’ve had in years the girls fixed my teeth up nicely. non judgemental positive environment also really went through with me and showed me the damage I had done and the next and best steps to keep my smile bright and beautiful and healthy. Was always abit scared of getting myself to the dentist would 100% go back here though.

Dr Yuen is a lifesaver. I had been getting migraines and to think it came from my tooth. She provided emergency treatment and scheduled me back to ensure that it did not happen again. She and her team provide holistic care for myself and my family. My toddler was booked in and they were amazing! He was not scared at all and had so much fun in the dentist chair! Thank you Yeronga Park!

Dr Nicole is amazing. She is very gentle and spends the time to explain things throughly so I can understand everything that is going on during my appointment. She is calm and makes me feel at ease for being at the dentist. The practice staff are so lovely which makes such a difference to have such friendly receptionists and dental assistants. Overall a really great experience :-)
